It took me years to work out that the relationships in your life have a major effect on how you feel. If the people around you criticise you and generally make you feel bad, then of course you are going to feel low. Have a look at your inner circle of family and friends and work out how they make you feel. A diary is a useful tool in helping you work out how people affect your mood. Talking to a professional like a counsellor is also a great way to get an objective point of view. Like with everything in life, follow your gut instinct when choosing a professional as you need to feel safe with the person. The main thing is to realise that you deserve happiness. You have every right to create a life where there is peace and love.

A friend of mine was overwhelmed the other day as she was literally emotionally and physically exhausted from looking after her family. She felt as though everyone was just taking, including her husband. I mentioned to her that she needed to look after herself first before she could really do anything for her family. Her glazed expression told me that she could see no way out of it. The first point of call in a situation like ...this is to have a chat with your partner. Let them know how you feel. Work out a plan so that you can get some 'me' time. I am not talking about a holiday away. Little bits of time such as maybe your partner cooks a couple of nights. You go for a coffee with your friends. Go for a walk by yourself. It is important to value yourself and look after 'you'. If you don't, you will find that you may get burnt out and be a very unhappy person. I am sure that your family would not want to see you miserable. So take some time to look after your needs, you are important too. xx
